I'm applying for a UK spouse visa from Pakistan: which English test do I need and what does it cost?

First partner or parent visa: A1. Extension after 2.5 years: A2, unless your first pass was A2 or higher. Settlement after five years: B1. A B1 or higher pass can be reused for the extension and for settlement while it stays on the approved list. Life Skills A2 can only be taken in the UK, so many applicants take B1 there for the extension instead (IELTS Life Skills).

Pakistan is not on the exempt-nationality list. A degree taught in English, confirmed by Ecctis, can replace the test. A new application needs a test awarded in the two years before you apply.

UKVI cancellation rules apply to Life Skills: 75% back more than 14 days before, 50% within 14 days but more than 2 days before, 25% within 2 days. Card payments to the British Council can attract 236Y advance tax (1% filers, 3% non-filers), which interbank transfer or cash deposit avoids.

Life Skills is pass or fail on everyday speaking and listening with an examiner and one other candidate, 16 to 18 minutes at A1.
