Sending and the IELTS comparison

UMass Boston must receive official scores directly from the testing agency. When you send a Duolingo result, filter for "undergraduate" or "graduate" programmes when you search for University of Massachusetts Boston, because the graduate page warns that otherwise scores can go to the wrong admissions office. Neither page states a validity period, sets Duolingo subscores or mentions teaching assistantships.

For comparison, the same pages set IELTS at 6.0 for undergraduates and for most graduate programmes, 6.5 for the 110 programmes and 7.0 for the two PhDs.

If your Duolingo score falls short

The first-year page says UMass Boston may offer provisional admission to undergraduates who meet every other criterion but whose TOEFL or IELTS results fall short, and refers them to the University Preparation ESL programme. It does not mention Duolingo for this route, and it is not offered for nursing, engineering or management. The graduate page lists no conditional route.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UMass Boston programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
