UGA accepts TOEFL or IELTS for graduate admission, reported electronically by the testing agency, or completion of Level 6 in the UGA Intensive English Program. It accepts the TOEFL iBT Home Edition, Paper Edition and MyBest scores, and IELTS including IELTS Online and the One Skill Retake. Duolingo has not been accepted since the Fall 2024 admissions cycle. See the English language proficiency requirement.
Degrees from accredited institutions in the US or in countries where English is the primary language, such as the UK, Australia and New Zealand, usually exempt you; degrees from countries where English is not the primary or official language do not. Students enrolled for at least a year at a regionally accredited US institution with strong grades may be waived. Some departments require a test regardless, and teaching assistants must meet the separate UGA TA policy. The College of Engineering adds that scores must be no more than two years old. Most international first-year applicants meet English proficiency through the SAT or ACT scores the Board of Regents requires, and they may also submit IELTS or TOEFL. Admitted international students in 2019–2023 averaged SAT EBRW 650, ACT English 30, IELTS 7.5 and TOEFL 102. Transfer applicants can show proficiency with IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80, SAT EBRW 430, ACT English 17 or two first-year composition courses at a US institution; transfer scores can be up to five years old. UGA's TOEFL and SAT code is 5813. See international students.
Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement the University of Georgia sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the UGA Graduate School English language proficiency page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
