Graduate: IELTS 6.5 or PTE 53

All graduate applicants, regardless of citizenship, must show English proficiency in one of three ways: a bachelor's degree or higher from a regionally accredited US institution or from an institution in a recognized English-speaking country where English is the primary language of instruction; official TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo or PTE scores at the minimums above; or completing Level 6 of the Intensive English Program at UH's Language and Culture Center.

Scores must be valid and reportable when you submit the application and are generally valid for two years from the test date. The recognized countries include Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ghana, Ireland, Nigeria, South Africa and the UK; India is not on the list. See the Graduate School page.

Undergraduate: TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo

Undergraduates meet the requirement with TOEFL iBT 4.0, IELTS 6.5 overall or Duolingo 105, which expire two full years after the test date. Other routes are a US high school diploma or degree, completing high school or a bachelor's equivalent in a recognized English-speaking country, 30 transferable US credit hours including English Composition 1 and 2 with a C or better, or Level 6 of UH's Intensive English Program. PTE is not among the tests listed. See undergraduate English requirements.

Student visa and next steps

The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement the University of Houston sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.

Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the UH Graduate School page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
