Validity and the IELTS level

The postgraduate page asks for an English language competency certificate dated within the last two years. Neither page mentions PTE Academic Online or a Pearson institution code. UL says results in other examinations may also be accepted.

Pearson's own PTE Core FAQ describes PTE Core as a general English test that is initially suitable only for work and migration routes to Canada, and says PTE Academic is the test accepted for university study.

For comparison, both pages ask IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any component, and accept Academic IELTS only, not General Training. They note that some programmes have a higher IELTS requirement.

If your PTE score falls short

Offer holders who do not meet the requirement can take pre-sessional English classes at the UL Language Centre on campus. For postgraduate entry the page also waives the requirement if you completed two or more years of bachelor's study (or a whole degree, PG diploma or master's) through English in a country where English is the official language of instruction, or lived and worked full time in Ireland for two or more years.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UL programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
