University of Manitoba English test minimums
Undergraduate scores are from UM's English language proficiency page; graduate scores are from the graduate studies admission requirements page. TOEFL iBT (undergraduates may also use the Home and Paper Editions) is 86 with 20 in each section for older tests, or 4.5 with 4.0 in each section for tests from 21 January 2026, at both levels.
Undergraduate Duolingo needs 120 with 105 in Literacy, Comprehension, Production and Conversation; graduate Duolingo needs 120 with 100 in reading, writing, listening and speaking. CAEL 60 (graduate: 60 in each subject) and Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency 180 are accepted at both levels.
| Level | IELTS Academic | TOEFL iBT | PTE Academic | Duolingo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate | 6.5, 6.0 each module | 86 (20 each) or 4.5 (4.0 each) | 58 | 120, 105 each subscore |
| Graduate | 6.5 | 86 (20 each) or 4.5 (4.0 each) | 61 | 120, 100 each skill |
One Skill Retake, IELTS Indicator and validity
Undergraduate: IELTS Academic on computer or paper and the IELTS Indicator are listed, and "IELTS One Skill Retake results are accepted" by undergraduate admissions. Results expire two years from the test date and must still be valid when your admission term begins. The Faculty of Law and the International Dentist Degree Program set their own tests and do not accept Duolingo.
Graduate: test scores older than two years are invalid, and UM will not use a TOEFL best score across sittings. Some departments have higher standards, so check your program. A graduate IELTS band minimum and a position on One Skill Retake are not stated on the graduate page.

Passing Level 5/AEPUCE of the English Language Centre's Intensive Academic English Program meets the undergraduate requirement; graduate applicants need 65% overall. Graduate applicants admitted to IAEP Level 5 can be conditionally admitted, but must finish the program before starting their master's.
Study permit and PGWP: separate rules
The University of Manitoba's scores decide admission only. IRCC sets no minimum English score for a study permit; any language condition is written into your letter of acceptance (see IELTS for a Canada study permit). The Post-Graduation Work Permit is a separate test again: university graduates need CLB 7 in all four skills, proved with IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core, not IELTS Academic (see IELTS for the PGWP).
