Graduate: full enrolment or English conditions

If your scores meet every section except Writing (for example IELTS 7 with Writing 6.5), you are admitted with an Advanced English Writing Class in your second semester. Bridge-range scores mean a semi-intensive course in your first semester, and IELTS 6.0 or below means Intensive English (Fall only; not offered for Spring 2027). Online, hybrid and 12-week-term programs require full-enrolment scores.

UMD accepts TOEFL Home Edition, MyBest scores, IELTS Online, IELTS Indicator, IELTS One Skill Retake and PTE Academic Online, and superscores within the same test. A degree from a US institution or from a listed country, such as Australia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Singapore or the UK, exempts you; India is not on the list. Programs may set stricter rules. Undergraduate: IELTS 7 or Duolingo 120

Undergraduates submit Duolingo (passing score 120), IELTS or IELTS Indicator (7) or TOEFL (5, or 95 on the 0–120 scale), less than two years old. Scores of Duolingo 115, IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 4.5 (94) or lower can mean courses at the Maryland English Institute. Waivers include four years at a US high school without ESL, a US degree, or English as a first language with citizenship or schooling in a listed country; India is not listed. See undergraduate proficiency.

Student visa and next steps

The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement the University of Maryland sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.

Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the UMD Graduate School English proficiency page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
