Graduate: IELTS 6.5, and the English-medium degree waiver
Applicants whose native language is not English take TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo. The TOEFL iBT Home Edition is accepted, TOEFL Essentials is not, and some programs set higher minimums. The test can be waived with a degree from a US institution or from a listed country such as Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand or the UK. It can also be waived with a degree from any country where the language of instruction was English, which covers Indian graduates of English-medium universities, if you submit proof: a statement on the official transcript, a NACES credential evaluation, or a letter from your university's registrar. See international credentials and applicants.
The School of Communication sets a higher bar: TOEFL 90, IELTS 7.0 or Duolingo 125. Use TOEFL code 5815 and send IELTS and Duolingo scores to "University of Miami – Graduate School". See the Communication international applicant process.

Competitive first-year applicants generally score above TOEFL 80 (4.5 on the new scale), IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 120. Codes: TOEFL C730, IELTS 4861, and for Duolingo choose "University of Miami Undergraduate Admissions". Waivers include at least three years at a high school outside the US where the medium of instruction is English, an A or B in AP or IB HL English, IB English A1 with a predicted 4, a C or better in IGCSE/GCE English as a first language, SAT reading and writing 650 or ACT English 27. Request a waiver with the form in your Applicant Portal. See English proficiency requirements.
Academically qualified applicants who miss the English requirement may be admitted for the following year if they complete level five of the University of Miami Intensive English Program within one year. You must still submit a TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo result, which need not be a passing score. See conditional admission.
Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement the University of Miami sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the University of Miami Graduate School international applicants page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
