Test rules and the IELTS comparison

The test must be taken within the last 24 months before the first day of instruction, and evidence must be submitted through the VinUni Admissions Portal no later than 14 days before instruction starts. Results from different tests cannot be combined. The policy says online tests are usually not considered valid, naming IELTS Indicator, IELTS Online and Duolingo as examples; it does not name PTE Academic Online or PTE Core, and it gives a code only for TOEFL (0506), not for PTE.

In the same table, PTE 56 (46) sits beside IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0 and TOEFL iBT 79 with no skill below 15.

If you fall short

Students below the IELTS 6.5 equivalent can receive conditional admission and be placed in Pathway English Advanced, an eight-week online summer course or a 15-week Fall course. Passing it gives direct admission; failing the summer course means submitting a recognised test result before the year starts or retaking the course in Fall with restricted course registration.

You do not need a test if you completed at least two years of full-time English-medium secondary or tertiary study within the last four years in a majority English-speaking country or at a recognised international school, or if you hold IB, AP or A-level qualifications on VinUni's list.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your VinUniversity programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
