Graduate admission: IELTS 6.5
Graduate applicants show English with TOEFL 79 internet-based (550 paper-based), IELTS 6.5, ELS level 112 or WKU's English as a Second Language International (ESLi) program. English evidence is not required for graduates of an accredited US undergraduate or graduate institution, or of other institutions approved by the Executive Director of Graduate Studies. No exempt-country list or medium-of-instruction rule is published, so ask Graduate Studies before relying on an English-medium degree. See the WKU graduate catalog.

Undergraduate admission and the Pathway Program
Direct undergraduate admission needs TOEFL 71, IELTS 6.0, PTE 52, Duolingo 100, SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 460, ELS level 109 or ESLi completion. The Pathway Program accepts TOEFL 61–70, IELTS 5.5, PTE 45–51 or Duolingo 90. The undergraduate Nursing program asks for higher English scores. See WKU English proficiency.
The admission requirements page also says a Duolingo score of 100 leads to the one-semester Pathway and 90 to the two-semester Pathway, which differs from the direct-admission table; check with International Admissions which applies to you.
Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement WKU sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the WKU admission requirements page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where Western Kentucky University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
