Pearson's explanation
Pearson's help centre answers this directly: each time you take the test you may get a different score. Differences in the overall and communicative skills scores should be quite small, and you may see some variation in the Skills Profile performance bars (Pearson help centre).
A test has 65–75 questions from 22 question types (Score Guide). Integrated items count for two skills, so a weak task can pull down more than one score.
What you can do
Read your Skills Profile. It covers eight skill areas, such as extended writing and short speaking, and gives recommendations for each. It is visible only to you and is not shared with institutions (Pearson help centre).
If you think the score is wrong, you can request a rescore. If you believe a technical issue affected your speaking score, you can request a technical review. Appeals are only possible after a rescore, technical review or malpractice decision, and they check procedure rather than re-marking your test (Pearson help centre). See how a PTE rescore works.
| Option | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Rescore | You want to challenge the score |
| Technical review | You believe a technical issue affected your speaking score |
| Appeal | Only after a rescore, technical review or malpractice decision; reviews procedure |
| Retake | Book once your last score is out; up to 12 tests in 12 months |

Institutions only see the score you send
A lower result does not cancel an earlier one. Institutions see only the score you share and cannot tell whether other attempts were better or worse (Pearson help centre). See can universities see previous PTE scores.
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for a PTE score to drop on a retake?+

Can I get my PTE test rechecked?+
Yes. You can request a rescore, or a technical review if you think a technical issue affected speaking.
Will universities see my lower PTE score?+
Only if you send it. Institutions see just the score you share.
Can I see which questions I got wrong?+
No. Pearson does not share test content or responses after the test.
