I'd like to talk about a ceramic mug that I use practically every single day. Visually, it is quite distinctive. It is slightly oversized, made from thick, speckled stoneware with an earthy, cream-coloured glaze on the outside and a deep forest green on the inside. It has got a fairly wide base, so it feels very sturdy, and the handle is comfortably large enough to slip three fingers through, which makes holding it really cosy, especially on cold mornings.

I actually bought it about three years ago while visiting a seaside town in Cornwall. I stumbled across a tiny independent pottery studio tucked away down a cobbled lane. The artisan was working on a pottery wheel at the back of the shop, and this mug caught my eye on a display shelf. It was completely handmade, so it had subtle imperfections, which I think give it a lot of charm.

Nowadays, it is an essential part of my morning routine. As soon as I wake up, I brew a strong cup of black coffee in it to kick-start my day. Later in the afternoon, if I am working from home, I often use it for peppermint tea or Earl Grey because the thick ceramic retains heat for a really long time, meaning my drink does not go cold while I am busy.

To be honest, it is special to me for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it brings back fond memories of a relaxing holiday whenever I hold it. Beyond that, though, there is something very comforting about having a familiar, well-crafted object to start the day with. It has simply become an indispensable little comfort in my daily life.

Jot down sensory details: speckled stoneware, wide base, earthy glaze.

How long should my answer be?+

Speak for the full two minutes, about 220 to 280 words at a natural pace. The examiner will stop you at two minutes, which is a good sign, not a problem.

Use its structure and vocabulary, not its sentences. Examiners recognise memorised answers and mark fluency down; a shorter answer from your own memory scores higher than a recited one.
