I'd like to talk about an evening I organised a few months ago, when I hosted a themed board game and DIY taco night at my flat for a group of close university friends. There were about six of us in total, and since we hadn't caught up properly for ages due to hectic work schedules, I really wanted to do something a bit more engaging than just sitting around watching a film.
In terms of preparation, I spent quite a bit of time getting everything sorted the day before. I went to the local market to pick up fresh ingredients, marinated various fillings, and laid out an entire taco station on the dining table so everyone could build their own food. I also rearranged the living room furniture to create a cosy, open space around the coffee table, set up some ambient lighting, and put together a relaxed background music playlist to set the right mood.
Once everyone arrived, we kicked things off with a strategy board game that requires a lot of negotiation and teamwork. To be honest, I was slightly worried it might feel a bit too intense, but it turned out to be an absolute blast. It sparked loads of friendly banter, and even the quieter friends in the group really got into the competitive spirit.
I think the reason it went down so well was that it gave everyone an active role. Because people were moving around making food and interacting directly during the game, there was never any awkward lull in conversation. It felt genuinely warm and memorable, and my friends still talk about organising a rematch.
