I would like to talk about a compact Bluetooth speaker that I bought a couple of years ago, which has pretty much become an essential gadget whenever my mates and I head outdoors.

It is roughly the size of a water bottle, cylindrical in shape, and finished in a vibrant teal fabric with rubberised ends so it does not get damaged if it takes a knock. I actually picked it up online just before going on a camping holiday, mainly because it was advertised as waterproof and dust-resistant. It is remarkably lightweight, so it easily slips into the side pocket of my rucksack without adding much weight at all.

During the warmer months, I use it almost every weekend. Whenever we arrange a picnic in the local park, have a barbecue in the back garden, or spend a sunny afternoon down by the river, it is the first thing I pack. We usually stream an eclectic mix of music, ranging from laid-back acoustic tracks in the afternoon to upbeat indie pop as the evening wears on. Everyone usually takes turns queuing up their favourite tunes on their mobile phones.

What makes it so handy for outdoor gatherings is a blend of its durability and battery life. It can easily run for around twelve hours on a single charge, which means we never have to worry about finding a power outlet halfway through the day. On top of that, the sound quality is surprisingly punchy for its size; it carries nicely in open spaces without needing to be deafeningly loud. It genuinely helps in setting the tone for the event and keeping everyone entertained.
