I’d like to talk about a brilliant barbecue I went to last July, which was hosted by one of my closest university friends, Marcus. He had recently moved into a new terraced house with a relatively spacious back garden, and he decided to hold a housewarming cookout on a remarkably warm Saturday afternoon.
There were roughly fifteen to twenty people there, mostly a mix of former course mates, some mutual friends, and a couple of Marcus's new neighbours. It was a really diverse group of people, many of whom hadn't seen each other in person for quite some time. Marcus had set up some garden furniture, laid down a few picnic rugs on the grass, and set up a portable speaker playing upbeat background music.
As for the food, Marcus and his partner had gone all out. They fired up a large charcoal barbecue and grilled seasoned chicken skewers, homemade beef patties, and vegetable kebabs topped with halloumi cheese. Everyone had been asked to bring something along, so there was a huge spread of fresh summer salads, dips, crusty bread, and crisps laid out on a trestle table. To keep everyone refreshed in the heat, there were coolers filled with ice, homemade elderflower cordial, and local craft ales.
What made the gathering so memorable was the genuinely relaxed and cheerful atmosphere. Because the weather was so pleasant, people stayed outdoors well into the evening until the sun went down. There were lots of impromptu conversations, plenty of hearty laughter, and even a casual game of lawn boules. It felt completely unpretentious, giving everyone a rare chance to truly unwind and catch up without any stiff social formalities.
