Tips

How to answer IELTS Academic Reading Diagram Labelling questions

  1. 1

Read the word limit, then inspect the numbered gaps and any labels already supplied.

  2. 2

Locate the passage section describing the apparatus. Match each arrow or numbered part to its function and position.

  3. 3

Do not assume the labels follow passage order: read the relevant description carefully.

  4. 4

Copy only the required words and check spelling. Do not add an article or unit unless the label needs it and the limit allows it.

IELTS Academic Reading Diagram Labelling questions: FAQ

What is the word limit for IELTS diagram label completion?+

Follow the limit printed above each diagram. This practice allows no more than two words per label. In the exam, the stated limit can vary; exceeding it loses the mark.

Do spelling and hyphenated words matter in diagram labels?+

Copy the spelling from the passage. IELTS counts a hyphenated word as one word. Do not replace the required label with a synonym.

Do diagram labels follow passage order?+

Not necessarily. Answers usually come from one part of the passage, but their diagram numbers may use a different order.

How many Diagram Labelling questions are in the IELTS Reading test?+

There is no fixed number. The test has 40 questions across three passages, and Diagram Labelling usually comes as one block of questions on a single passage; some tests leave it out. The drills here have 6 questions each.

How long should I spend on Diagram Labelling questions?+

IELTS Academic Reading gives you 60 minutes for three passages, so allow about 20 minutes per passage, including its Diagram Labelling questions. One drill here takes about 10 minutes.

Do these Diagram Labelling practice questions have answers?+

Yes. Every drill has an answer key with an explanation for each question, and your answers are marked instantly.

How are Diagram Labelling questions marked?+

Each correct answer is one mark, and your total out of 40 becomes your band: in Academic Reading, about 15 correct answers out of 40 gives band 5, 23 gives band 6, 30 gives band 7 and 35 gives band 8. Spelling must be correct, and an answer over the word limit is marked wrong.

Is Diagram Labelling in IELTS General Training Reading too?+

Yes. Both papers use the same question types; only the texts differ. In our General Training practice, Diagram Labelling drills are in Section 1 and Section 2 and Section 3.
