1

Have you ever stayed in a hostel?

Yes, I have, actually. A couple of years ago, I went backpacking across Portugal with a mate from university, and we stayed in dorms the whole time. It was surprisingly comfortable and definitely saved us a fair bit of money.

2

What do you think are the advantages of staying in a hostel?

Well, the obvious one is the cost, as it's way cheaper than booking a private room somewhere else. But besides that, it’s a brilliant way to socialise and swap travel tips with other backpackers in the communal lounge.

3

Do you prefer staying in a hostel or a hotel?

It depends on the trip, really. If I’m travelling on a shoestring budget or on my own, I’d pick a hostel for the friendly atmosphere. However, if I’m exhausted and just want total peace and quiet, I’d definitely opt for a hotel.

4

What facilities do you think a good hostel should have?

I’d say secure lockers are essential so you don't have to worry about your luggage. Having a well-equipped shared kitchen is also handy, along with reliable Wi-Fi so you can look up directions and keep in touch with family.

5

Would you like to stay in a hostel on your next holiday?

I reckon I probably will. I’m planning a walking holiday in Scotland later this year, and booking a bed in a youth hostel near the trails makes far more sense than spending a fortune on a fancy hotel room.
