IELTS Speaking Part 1

Sounds: questions and Band 8 answers

The examiner asks three to five short questions on two or three everyday topics in the first four to five minutes. These are the 5 questions about sounds in the BandLadder test bank, with sample answers for the most frequent ones. Aim for two or three sentences each: answer, reason, one detail.

Sample answers

What sounds do you dislike?

Honestly, the high-pitched screeching of a drill is unbearable for me. It sets my teeth on edge immediately, especially when neighbours are doing renovations early in the morning. I find it incredibly grating and it usually forces me to put on noise-cancelling headphones to focus on my work.

What natural sound(s) do you like the most?

I have always found the rhythmic crashing of ocean waves to be incredibly therapeutic. There is something profoundly calming about sitting on the shore and listening to the tide ebb and flow. It helps me clear my mind and escape the relentless hustle and bustle of city life.

Are there any sounds that you like?

The gentle crackling of a log fire is definitely at the top of my list. During the winter months, it creates such a cosy and intimate atmosphere at home. It is quite a nostalgic sound that makes me feel completely relaxed and at peace after a long day.

What sounds remind you of your childhood?

Hearing the distant chime of an ice cream van always takes me right back to my primary school days. We used to rush outside the moment we heard that signature melody. It is a very specific, happy trigger that instantly reminds me of long, golden summer afternoons spent playing outdoors.

What type of noise do you come across in your daily life?

Living in a busy urban area, I am constantly surrounded by the relentless hum of traffic. It is an unavoidable drone of engines and sirens that seems to persist throughout the day. Occasionally, I hear the distant clatter of the underground train, which has become a familiar background rhythm.

Details are invented. Use the shape, not the sentences: examiners mark memorised answers down.
