IELTS for Switzerland: programme scores, teaching languages and practice

An English-taught master's, a mainly German bachelor's and a programme with optional English certificates need different preparation decisions. Start with the language and evidence your Swiss programme actually requires, then set your IELTS targets.
  • Test in the score examples: IELTS Academic
  • First check: Teaching language
  • Certificate requirement: Programme-specific

Three different English-evidence policies

Admissions scopePublished policyPreparation decision
ETH Zurich master's: English certificate routeAcademic or Academic Online: 7.0 overall, at least 6.0 in each sectionCheck whether the programme also needs German and whether a stated exemption applies.
EPFL Computer Science master'sStrong English required; English certificates such as IELTS are optionalCheck readiness for English study without inventing a mandatory IELTS score.
HSLU MSc IT, Digitalization & SustainabilityIts language clarification lists Academic 7.0 or above, in person; certificate no older than two yearsChoose an accepted test format and allow time to provide the evidence.
These are named admission policies, not a Swiss national score or immigration threshold. Other academic conditions still apply. A requirement for a test certificate is different from advice about the language ability needed to study successfully.

Check teaching language before booking an English test

ETH bachelor's teaching is mainly German; its non-Swiss matriculation route may require a German C1 certificate. EPFL bachelor's courses are mainly French, while master's teaching languages vary. EPFL recommends at least C1 in the teaching languages, which is not itself a mandatory IELTS score. An English result cannot replace evidence of another language your course requires.

  • Save the exact programme and intake page, then list its teaching languages and required evidence for each one.
  • Separate a required certificate from a recommended proficiency level. If an exemption applies, check the documents needed to establish it.
  • Check online-test and retake acceptance separately. ETH lists Academic Online, while the HSLU programme's clarification specifies in-person IELTS; do not infer a One Skill Retake policy from either statement.

Build a practice record around your weakest required skill

For an ETH target, an overall 7.0 with Writing 5.5 still misses the published English component floor. Keep an overall target and four separate skill targets. Small practice sets can expose weaknesses but do not establish a full-test band or admission eligibility.

Academic ReadingAnswer a fresh passage and mark the evidence for each answer.Group mistakes by question type; repeat the weakest type on a new passage.
ListeningComplete an audio exercise before checking the key and transcript.Separate misheard meaning from spelling and word-ending errors.
Academic WritingWrite a Task 1 overview and a separate Task 2 argument before reviewing samples.Revise missing comparisons or unsupported ideas in your own answer.
SpeakingRecord a Part 2 answer, then replay it.Note unclear points and long pauses. Playback is self-review, not an AI band score.

Use public exercises and model answers freely. AI evaluation and full mocks have their own account and usage conditions. Once your evidence deadline is known, reserve time for revision, an accepted test and any result submission steps.

Frequently asked questions

Is IELTS compulsory for every Swiss university?+

No. Check the programme, teaching language and certificate policy. The EPFL Computer Science master's makes English certificates optional, while ETH publishes required English certificates and defined exemptions for its master's applications.

Is IELTS 7.0 enough for ETH Zurich?+

For the master's English-certificate route, ETH also requires at least 6.0 in each section. Language evidence alone does not establish admission eligibility, and your programme may require German too.

Can I use IELTS Online for any Swiss programme?+

No. ETH lists Academic Online, but HSLU's MSc IT, Digitalization & Sustainability clarification specifies in-person IELTS. Check the format accepted by your own programme before booking.
