PTE Write Essay time management: plan, write and check in 20 minutes

Most essays that lose easy points are not badly argued. They are written until the last second, so nobody checks the word count, the stray typo or the plan notes still at the top. Twenty minutes is enough, if the last three belong to checking.

What is the PTE essay time limit?

Write Essay is one item in Part 1 of PTE Academic (PTE Core has Write Email instead). Part 1 items are each timed on their own, so finishing early banks no time for later tasks (BandLadder's PTE timing reference).

Why the check matters: two of the seven scored traits, Form and Spelling, depend on details you only catch by reading your essay back.

Content, structure and range carry more points, and a human expert also reviews them (Score Guide p. 15); PTE essay types and General Linguistic Range cover those. This sheet is about the clock.

How to manage time in the PTE essay: the 3–14–3 split

BandLadder advice: treat the 20 minutes as three blocks, with checkpoints on the countdown so you know your pace without doing maths mid-sentence.

The 3–14–3 split (BandLadder method)

  1. 1

Plan: 20:00 to 17:00. Read the last sentence of the prompt, decide your position, and type five plan lines at the top of the box.

  2. 2

Write: 17:00 to 3:00. Introduction, two body paragraphs, conclusion. Turn each plan line into a topic sentence, then delete the plan line.

  3. 3

Check: 3:00 to 0:00. Word count, leftover notes, paragraph breaks, then spelling. No new ideas in this block.

Checkpoints for the PTE essay (timer counts down)

Timer showsWhere you should beRough word count
17:00Plan typed; introduction started0 (plan lines only)
12:00Introduction and body paragraph 1 doneabout 110–130
7:00Body paragraph 2 doneabout 190–210
3:00Conclusion done; checking beginsabout 230–270

BandLadder's targets for a 250-word essay. Slow typists can move the 12:00 checkpoint to 11:00, but never give up the 3:00 check.

Aim for about 250 words, not 300: it leaves a buffer on both sides of the Form 2 range and saves time for the check. Practise on Write Essay practice prompts with a timer so the checkpoints become habit.

PTE essay planning in 3 minutes

Three minutes buys five lines, not an outline. What goes in them is an argument question (see Development, Structure and Coherence); the timing question is where they go. Type them in the answer box so you can reuse the words, then delete each line once its paragraph exists. The position line becomes the second sentence of a two-sentence PTE essay introduction.

Worked example 1: a 3-minute plan (original prompt)

Prompt: Hobby metal detectorists sometimes find coins and jewellery that are hundreds of years old. Some people say these finds should belong to the person who discovers them, while others believe they should go to public museums. Discuss both views and give your own opiniontwo jobs. Plan typed at the top of the box: POS museums should keep historic finds, but finders deserve a fair rewardposition B1 findersview 1: long hours searching; a reward keeps them reporting finds B2 museumsview 2: shared history; a find sold privately loses its story EX a ring from a ploughed fieldexample, sold online, its location never recorded CONC museum keeps it, finder paid its value

  • → About 45 words of notes, not sentences: abbreviations are fine because none of it will be submitted.
  • → Each line becomes one topic sentence, so writing is mostly expanding, not deciding.

PTE essay word count and spelling: the last 3 minutes

BandLadder advice: check in a fixed order, cheapest fix first, so that if the timer runs out mid-check, the costliest problems are already solved.

The 3-minute check pass

  1. 1

Word Count. Read the counter. Between 200 and 300? If not, fix it now.

  2. 2

Leftovers. Scroll to the top and bottom. Delete plan lines, half-finished sentences and doubled words from Cut and Paste.

  3. 3

Shape. Four paragraphs separated by line breaks; every sentence ends with a full stop; nothing in capitals.

  4. 4

Spelling. Read the long words, then words with double letters and -ie- or -ei-. Keep one spelling convention throughout.

Worked example 2: a body paragraph at 3:00, before the check

B2 museums: shared historyplan left in On the other hand, museums argue that a find belongs to everyone. When a ring is sold to a private collecterspelling, the public can no longer see it, and archaeologists lose the record of where it was buried. For this reason, many historians believe that the favorconvention done by a finder is only complete when the object is recorded and displayed in a public collection.

  • → Delete the plan line: it adds four words and sits above the paragraph as a fragment.
  • → 'Collecter' should be 'collector': one error already takes Spelling from 2 to 1, and a second takes it to 0 (Score Guide p. 39). 'Favor' is US spelling in an essay that uses UK 'jewellery', so make it 'favour'.

Running out of time in the PTE essay: what to cut

Anything not typed by 0:00 is not part of your answer. When a checkpoint goes badly, cut depth, never structure: a short second example costs far less than a missing conclusion, a word count under 200 or an unchecked page (BandLadder advice).

Short of time: what to do at each checkpoint (BandLadder advice)

SituationCutKeep
12:00, body 1 not finishedThe second example in body 1Topic sentence, one reason, one example
7:00, under 150 wordsBody 2 shrinks to three sentencesA clear point for the second view or reason
4:00, no conclusion yetAny further developmentOne or two sentences that restate your position in new words
1:00, check not startedEverything except the counter and a spelling scanA Word Count between 200 and 300

A complete four-paragraph essay of about 220 words beats a brilliant 290-word essay with no ending.

✗ At 3:00 you are at 312 words, so you delete the conclusion to get under 300.

✓ Delete one supporting sentence, such as a second example, and keep the conclusion.

The descriptors for Development, Structure and Coherence look for an introduction and a conclusion (Score Guide pp. 35–36).

Your turn: PTE essay time check

Each situation happens during the 20-minute Write Essay timer. Choose the best move.

  1. The timer shows 3:00. Your essay is finished at 244 words, but you have an idea for a better example in body 2. What do you do?
    • A. Rewrite body 2 with the new example
    • B. Start the check pass
    • C. Add the new example as an extra paragraph
    Show answer

    Start the check pass

The last 3 minutes are for Form and spelling; a new example now risks a half-finished sentence and no check.

  2. Your Word Count shows 286, and five plan lines (about 40 words) are still at the top. Is the essay inside 200–300 after you delete them?
    • A. Yes, about 246 words
    • B. No, it is still over 300
    • C. No, it drops under 200
    Show answer

    Yes, about 246 words

286 minus about 40 leaves about 246, inside the Form 2 range of 200–300 (Score Guide p. 35).

  3. Your check finds 'neighbour', 'colour' and 'center' in the same essay. What do you change?
    • A. Nothing: all three are correct words
    • B. 'center' to 'centre'
    • C. 'colour' to 'color'
    Show answer

    'center' to 'centre'

Pearson asks for one consistent convention. Two UK spellings and one US: change the odd one out. Changing only 'colour' still leaves a mix.
