Columbia College English placement scores
Scores are from Columbia's English proficiency page. Instead of an external test you can present English 12 or first-year English from BC, or take Columbia's own Language & Writing Assessment (LWA); if you provide both, the higher placement counts. CAEL is 70, 60–69 or 40–49 with matching Writing scores. For the TOEFL iBT, Columbia sets an overall, a Writing score and two of Reading, Listening and Speaking, as below.
| Level | IELTS Academic | TOEFL iBT | PTE Academic | Duolingo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| English 101 | 6.5, Writing 6.5 | 4.5 (W 4.5), or 88 (W 21) before 21 Jan 2026 | 65, Writing 65 | 115 |
| English 100 | 6.5, Writing 6.0 | 4.5 (W 4), or 79 (W 19) before 21 Jan 2026 | 60, Writing 60 | 110 |
| English 099 | 6.0, Writing 5.5 | 4 (W 3.5), or 71 (W 16) before 21 Jan 2026 | 55, Writing 55 | 100 |
Admission without a test
Columbia's admission FAQ says there is generally no minimum English level for admission to an academic program, but all new students must prove their language ability before registering, and those with lower English are scheduled for non-credit English classes before or during their studies. The requirements page adds that you must meet the English requirement before receiving the official letter of acceptance.
Indian applicants need 75% in their best four Grade 12 academic courses (State Boards and National Open School) or 70% (CBSE and ISCE), completed no more than two years before applying. If you later transfer to a university outside BC, Columbia warns you may need to present IELTS or TOEFL again. A position on IELTS One Skill Retake is not stated by Columbia.

Columbia's scores decide placement and admission only. IRCC sets no minimum English score for a study permit; any language condition is written into your letter of acceptance (see IELTS for a Canada study permit). Columbia is a private institution, and IRCC's DLI entry for Columbia College says you are eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit only if you complete the Associate of Arts or Associate of Science, and not if you complete any other program there. Columbia's own immigration page words its PGWP note around completing a bachelor's degree, so check with its immigration advisor before you choose a program.
IRCC's PGWP eligibility page asks for CLB 7 after a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree or any other university program, and CLB 5 after college, polytechnic and other non-university programs, which also face a field-of-study rule if you applied for your study permit on or after 1 November 2024. Columbia does not say which category its associate degrees fall into. On IELTS General Training, CLB 7 is 6.0 in every skill and CLB 5 is Reading 4.0 and 5.0 in the others (IRCC score table); the PGWP does not take IELTS Academic (see IELTS for the PGWP).
