Exempt countries, and what Indian students need

No test is needed if you apply from a listed country, which includes Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Gambia, Botswana, South Africa, Singapore and Cameroon (with proof of instruction in English). India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal are not on the list, so applicants from those countries need a score.

Two other exemptions apply: one year (30 credit hours) of post-secondary study in Canada or a listed country, or graduation from a Canadian secondary school with a Year 12 English grade of 70% or higher.

Conditional offers and intakes

If you meet the academic requirements but not the English one, Crandall can make a conditional offer while you complete a pathway: McKenzie College EAP Level 5, Atlantic Canada Language Academy B2+, or Planeta Immiland Education's advanced-level certificate. You can also retake your test at home; a revised offer then follows for the next available intake.

Crandall's international admissions page lists a CAD 100 application fee. Bachelor's applications for September run from 1 October to 15 April; its master's programs also take January and May intakes.

Study permit and PGWP: separate rules

Crandall's scores decide admission only. Immigration is a separate set of tests: for the study permit see IELTS for a Canada study permit, and for whether a Post-Graduation Work Permit applies after your program and which test and level it needs, see IELTS for the Canada PGWP.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Crandall University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
