How many times can you take IELTS?

As many times as you like. IELTS sets no limit on attempts and no waiting period between them: ielts.org says you can resit as soon as you feel ready, and the British Council and IDP say the same, with the full fee each time. If one skill held you back, One Skill Retake lets you resit just that skill within 60 days of an IELTS on computer test.

The rule: no limit and no gap

ielts.org: if you do not get the score you wanted, you can apply to take the test again as soon as you feel ready (ielts.org). The British Council: you can take IELTS as many times as you need, subject to a fee each time (British Council). IDP India: there are no restrictions on retaking IELTS, and you can register as soon as you are ready (IDP India).

ielts.org adds a warning worth taking seriously: your score is unlikely to improve without extra work on your English (ielts.org).

The exception: IELTS Life Skills

IDP India says a test taker who has passed IELTS Life Skills cannot retake the same level within two years: pass A1 and you cannot sit A1 again for two years, and the same for B1 (IDP India). If you fail Life Skills, the British Council says you retake and pay again until you pass (British Council).

Will a university see my earlier attempts?

The British Council says a new institution only sees the Test Report Form you ask it to share or share yourself (British Council). Each result is separate, so you choose which one to send. Results are recommended for two years from the test date; see IELTS validity.

Booking and results rules are set per country and test centre, and they change. Check the page for the country where you will sit the test. This guide is general information, not official IELTS advice.
