Professional registration

Do engineers need IELTS for the UK?

Not for professional registration. The Engineering Council names no English test or score for EngTech, IEng or CEng; its regulations say your application, documents and interview must be in English. The English test most engineers face is for the visa: since 8 January 2026, new Skilled Worker applicants must prove English at CEFR level B2, for example with a Secure English Language Test.

What the Engineering Council requires

The Engineering Council's Regulations for Registration (fourth edition, issue 4.4, March 2025) say the application, supporting documentation and interview shall be in English (subject to the Welsh Language Act 1993), and that another language may be used only to clarify a word or point so the interview can continue. The interview is obligatory for CEng and IEng and at the institution's discretion for EngTech.

There is no IELTS, PTE or OET score in these regulations. The Council does not register individuals directly: its international FAQs say you first join a Licensed Professional Engineering Institution (PEI), which carries out the assessment. Registration is open to anyone, anywhere, who meets the competence standard, and Washington Accord degrees are treated as meeting the CEng education requirement.

Because your PEI runs the assessment, check its membership rules too; any English evidence a particular institution asks for is not set by the Engineering Council.

Skilled Worker visa English

From GOV.UK's Skilled Worker knowledge of English page. You can prove English by a UK school qualification (GCSE, A level or listed Scottish qualifications begun under 18), a degree taught in English by a UK institution, a non-UK degree taught in English confirmed by Ecctis as equivalent to a UK bachelor's or higher, or a Secure English Language Test from an approved provider at CEFR B2 or above.

Which IELTS to book

For the visa, an English test must be a Secure English Language Test from an approved provider; for IELTS, GOV.UK says the approved test is 'IELTS for UKVI' (or IELTS Life Skills), not standard IELTS, and the result must have been awarded in the two years before your application. See our Skilled Worker visa guide for the B2 band scores and our UKVI comparison. If you already proved English in a previous successful visa application, you may not need to prove it again. Check the GOV.UK page before you book, as the B2 rule is recent.
