NBCC English test minimums
Scores are from NBCC's English language requirements page, which applies to all international and permanent resident applicants. NBCC accepts the TOEFL iBT Home Edition and still accepts old-scale TOEFL results at 80 with no section below 18; its TOEFL code is 3027. Other options are Cambridge C1 Advanced 169, CAEL 60 (test centre or online) and Oxford ELLT Digital 6 with no section below 5, taken within one week.
Note the gap between tests: NBCC's PTE minimum of 65 with 60 in each part is demanding next to its IELTS 6.0, so if you are choosing a test, compare them with the PTE to IELTS converter. Pharmacy Technician follows the national pharmacy regulators' English rules instead.
| Level | IELTS Academic | TOEFL iBT | PTE Academic | Duolingo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All programs | 6.0, no band below 5.5 | 4.0 (4.0 each), or 80 (18 each) on the old scale | 65, no part below 60 | 100, no subscore below 90 |
Exemptions and language pathways
You may be exempt if English is your first language, if you completed at least three years of secondary education in English, or at least one year at a recognised post-secondary institution in English, within the last two years. NB English 121 or 122 at 70% also counts.
Below the scores, NBCC accepts completed pathways from partner schools, including McKenzie Language School and Saint John College (UNB) EAP Level 5 at 75%, Oxford International Halifax UCP Level 400 at 75%, ICEAP Level 6, CLLC Level 6, ACLA Level 7, ILSC Intermediate 4 and The Language Gallery Pathway Level 5. Applicants on a recognised pathway may get a deadline extension on request.

Take a free scored IELTS mock →Study permit and PGWP: separate rules
NBCC's scores decide admission only. IRCC sets no minimum English score for a study permit; any language condition is written into your letter of acceptance (see IELTS for a Canada study permit). The Post-Graduation Work Permit is a separate test again. IRCC's PGWP eligibility page asks for CLB 7 in all four skills if you graduate with a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree or from any other university program, and CLB 5 for any other college, polytechnic or non-university program, so a bachelor's degree earned at a college still needs CLB 7. On IELTS General Training, CLB 7 is 6.0 in every skill and CLB 5 is Reading 4.0 and Writing, Listening and Speaking 5.0 (IRCC score table). The PGWP takes IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core, not IELTS Academic, and college programs also face a field-of-study rule if you applied for your study permit on or after 1 November 2024 (see IELTS for the PGWP). NBCC's language requirements page links to its own list of programs matched to IRCC's PGWP-eligible fields of study.
