SAIT English test minimums
Scores are from SAIT's English proficiency page, which applies one set of scores to its programs, each meeting English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2. TOEFL (Home Edition accepted, MyBest not accepted) needs 20 in each category before 21 January 2026, and from that date 4.5 overall with 4.5 in each category.
Other options: CAEL or CAEL Online 60 in each skill, CLB 8 in each section, Michigan English Test 51, Cambridge English 169 in each skill, Oxford Test of English 130 in each module, LanguageCert Academic 65–69 in each skill and Oxford ELLT 6 in each component. Separate scores for health programs are not stated by SAIT.
| Level | IELTS Academic | TOEFL iBT | PTE Academic | Duolingo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All programs | 6.0 in each skill | 20 each, or 4.5 (4.5 each) from 21 Jan 2026 | 53 | 115, 95 in each subscore |
SAIT's 12-month validity rule
SAIT does not accept assessment tests taken more than 12 months before you submit your application, half the two years most colleges allow. If you get an application transfer or deferral and a year has passed, you must send new results.
An overall IELTS score is not stated by SAIT; only the 6.0 per-skill minimum. A position on IELTS One Skill Retake and on IELTS Online is not stated by SAIT, and it keeps the right to use discretion on English.

Three years of full-time English-medium secondary school, two years of English-medium post-secondary study, a C or better in a post-secondary English or communications course, or both COMN155 and SPCH155 in SAIT's English Language Foundations program also count. SAIT lists recognized alternatives at private language schools, several pegged to IELTS 6.0 or 6.5 in each skill.
Study permit and PGWP: separate rules
SAIT's scores decide admission only. IRCC sets no minimum English score for a study permit; any language condition is written into your letter of acceptance (see IELTS for a Canada study permit). The Post-Graduation Work Permit is a separate test again. IRCC's PGWP eligibility page asks for CLB 7 in all four skills if you graduate with a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree or from any other university program, and CLB 5 for any other college, polytechnic or non-university program, so a bachelor's degree earned at a college still needs CLB 7. On IELTS General Training, CLB 7 is 6.0 in every skill and CLB 5 is Reading 4.0 and Writing, Listening and Speaking 5.0 (IRCC score table). The PGWP takes IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core, not IELTS Academic, and college programs also face a field-of-study rule if you applied for your study permit on or after 1 November 2024 (see IELTS for the PGWP).
