Graduate: IELTS 6.5, and the waiver list

UAB also accepts TOEFL Essentials 8.5 and IELA 176. Scores must be taken within two years of the date you submit the application, and IELTS results are verified with the TRF number, so they need no official send. Students below a program's minimum can look at the Graduate Pathway, which UAB says needs a 2.5 GPA and TOEFL 65 or IELTS 5.5 and assures admission on completion; the Computer Science page points to an INTO Graduate Pathway.

The test may be waived for a US bachelor's, graduate or professional degree with a 3.00 GPA, or for citizens of listed countries such as Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ghana, Kenya, New Zealand, Nigeria, South Africa and the UK. India is not on the list, and UAB lists no English-medium-degree waiver. See international applicants.

Undergraduate: IELTS 6.0 or Duolingo 120

First-year applicants whose native language is not English submit TOEFL 77, TOEFL Essentials 8.5, IELTS 6.0 with at least 5.5 in each section, IELA 176, Duolingo 120 or Gaokao 120, taken within two years. Two years at a US high school or 24 transferable semester hours at a US college exempts you. PTE is not on the undergraduate list. See international freshman.

Student visa and next steps

The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement UAB sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.

Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the UAB Graduate School international applicants page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
