University of New Mexico English requirements at a glance
Source: International Admissions' English Proficiency Requirements, which sets one table for both levels. UNM does not state IELTS band minimums or a score validity period on that page. TOEFL scores go through ETS to code 4845; Duolingo and PTE Express scores go through the providers, and IELTS, PTE and other results are uploaded.
| Level | IELTS Academic | TOEFL iBT | Duolingo | PTE Academic |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate | 6.5 | 4.5 (old scale 79) | 105 | 53 |
| Undergraduate | 6.0 | 4.0 (old scale 68) | 95 | 47 |
Other accepted tests
UNM also lists TOEFL Essentials (B2 undergraduate, C1 graduate), Cambridge CAE/CPE (C1 undergraduate, C2 graduate), LanguageCert Test of English (68 or 74 with no skill below 60), the Oxford Test of English (125 or 140) and PTE Express (76 or 85). Undergraduates can also use SAT Reading and Writing 500.

UNM lists exceptions including four years of US high school with a 2.5 GPA, ACT English 19, SAT EBRW 500, two semesters of freshman English composition with a C or higher at a regionally accredited US college, a bachelor's degree from the US or from a recognised institution in English-speaking Canada, the UK, South Africa, Australia or New Zealand, completing CELAC's Academic Bridge level with a 2.5 GPA, or coming from a listed English-speaking country.
All Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering applicants must submit a score from an approved test; freshman composition grades cannot replace it for those majors. See English Proficiency Requirements.
Conditional admission through CELAC
UNM can issue an undergraduate conditional admission letter to students who meet the academic requirements but not the English one. You study at the Center for English Language and American Culture (CELAC) on a CELAC I-20, and once you reach the required level and are admitted, UNM issues a new I-20 for academic study. The CELAC page describes this for undergraduates only. See conditional admission.
Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement the University of New Mexico sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the UNM English Proficiency Requirements page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar. To see where you stand now, take a timed IELTS mock test.
