What IELTS score do you need for Vancouver Film School?

Vancouver Film School (VFS) asks international applicants to every program except English for Creative Arts for IELTS Academic 6.0, TOEFL iBT 76, PTE 55, CELPIP Level 7 or Duolingo 110. English for Creative Arts, its own preparatory program, accepts IELTS 5.0. If you have not passed a test yet, VFS can accept you conditionally until one month before your start date.

Ways to meet the standard without a test

VFS also accepts CELPIP Level 7, Cambridge B2 at 176 or higher and Oxford/OIDI Level 7. Without a test you can qualify with three years of full-time secondary school (Grades 8 to 12, or two years if they are Grades 10 to 12) in a country where English is a principal language; IGCSE English at grade C/5 as a first language or B/6 as a second language; IB English A1 or A2 at grade 5; or two years of full-time post-secondary study at an accredited institution where English is the language of instruction.

That post-secondary route names no country, so two years at an English-medium college in India, Pakistan or Nigeria may meet it; check with your admissions advisor. VFS also lists Vancouver ESL schools whose levels count, such as ELS Level 109, EF Level B2 and Canadian College Level 140.

Conditional acceptance

If you have not passed an approved test you may be accepted on a conditional basis. You then report to your admissions advisor on what you are doing to improve your English, and you must pass an approved test no later than one month before your start date or risk having your enrolment postponed or cancelled.

VFS's scores decide admission only. Immigration is a separate set of tests: for the study permit see IELTS for a Canada study permit, and for whether a Post-Graduation Work Permit applies after your program and which test and level it needs, see IELTS for the Canada PGWP. VFS notes that programs longer than six months need a study permit and lists its DLI number as O19239015912.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Vancouver Film School publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
