IELTS for UKVI and PTE Academic UKVI can both provide four-skill SELT evidence. Choose the test your visa route and, where relevant, university require. A degree-level Student visa may use a qualifying university's own English assessment; a UKVI-branded test is not automatically necessary for every student.

Which IELTS or PTE test do you need for a UK visa?
- Four-skill SELT required: compare IELTS for UKVI and PTE Academic UKVI. Standard IELTS and PTE Academic are not interchangeable with their UKVI products when a SELT is specifically required.
- Speaking-and-listening evidence required: investigate IELTS Life Skills or PTE Home at the level named for your route. A two-skill B1 test does not establish four-skill B1.
- University admission: check the named course's accepted tests and all skill minimums, then ask the university how it will record your English evidence for sponsorship.
The Home Office SELT guidance identifies approved products, providers and centres. The product, required skills and level must all fit; the brand name alone is insufficient.
Student visas: university admission and visa evidence are separate checks
The Student route requires B2-equivalent English for degree-level study or above and B1 below degree level. An eligible higher education provider with a track record of compliance can assess a degree-level applicant itself and record the assessment on the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). The assessment must establish B2 in all four skills. Sources: Student visa English guidance and Appendix English Language, EL 8.1–8.2.
Ask admissions: “For my course and CAS, will you assess my English yourselves, and which exact test and scores will you accept?” Keep the reply with your offer. A course can require scores above a visa minimum; an admission waiver does not, by itself, explain how the visa evidence requirement is met.

Skilled Worker and family routes: check your application stage
The current Skilled Worker guidance requires B2 for a new application and switching from a different visa. If you held Skilled Worker permission before 8 January 2026 and are extending or updating it, the guidance retains B1 and says you do not need to prove English again. Switching from Health and Care Worker permission is also addressed separately. The relevant distinction is your previous permission and application type, not whether you submit an extension before that date.
Other evidence may qualify, including specified qualifications or a relevant professional regulator's accepted English assessment. Verify the exact conditions on that route's page rather than assuming every applicant must purchase a SELT.
For a family visa, the first application generally requires at least A1 unless an exemption or other accepted evidence applies. After 2.5 years, someone who previously passed A1 may need A2 in speaking and listening. Higher results and previous exemptions have their own rules. Check your stage before choosing PTE Home or IELTS Life Skills.
PTE UKVI vs IELTS scores: B1 and B2
For these four-skill levels, compare every component separately:

Threshold sources: British Council's IELTS CEFR score mapping and Pearson's UK visa score table. We use GOV.UK for the route's current level, then the provider's mapping for the test score. These are not university admission requirements or a general IELTS–PTE conversion.
What does “UKVI CEFR threshold met” mean? Read it alongside the level, test product and skills on the report. Meeting a lower level does not establish the higher level your route asks for. A strong overall score cannot compensate for a required component below its minimum, and a test result is not a visa approval.

These are invented learning examples, not learner results. Compare Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, in that order. Assume the correct UKVI product; assess only the score floor.
- Report A, IELTS: 6.5, 6.0, 5.0, 6.0.
- Report B, IELTS: 5.5, 5.5, 5.5, 5.5.
- Report C, PTE: 67, 64, 58, 70.
Reveal the answers and choose the next practice step
Only Report B clears this score floor. Report A misses the Writing minimum by half a band. Report C misses the Writing minimum by one point. Extra points in other skills do not repair either gap.
For A or C, start with a writing diagnostic, examine the feedback and practise the specific weakness it identifies. For B, keep practising all four skills for consistency. These examples check arithmetic against published thresholds; they do not predict your test-day performance or determine an application outcome.

Which format should you practise?
IELTS for UKVI offers Academic and General Training versions; use the version your receiving organisation requires. Their corresponding standard and UKVI tests have the same format and difficulty, with additional UKVI security arrangements. IELTS Life Skills is a different product. Compare the official IELTS products.
PTE Academic UKVI shares PTE Academic's content, format and scoring, while supplying the SELT reference number for visa use. Pearson describes scoring as using AI and human expertise; it is inaccurate to promise that no human is ever involved. See the official PTE Academic UKVI description.
Try a sample in each relevant format before committing to a preparation plan. Consider typing comfort, microphone responses, time management and which skills need the most work. Do not choose on a promise that one test is universally easier or guarantees a visa.
Booking with a deadline: dates, fees and results
Available appointments depend on the exact product and test centre. A blog cannot establish which dates remain available for a deadline four weeks away. Check the official booking service for your location, confirm the product name, then allow time for results and possible further preparation.
Pearson advertises results typically within two days; that is not a deadline guarantee. Compare the current local fee, rescheduling conditions and available dates in the provider's booking service. This page does not present one country's price as a worldwide fee or show unverified appointment availability.
Before payment, write down the exact product, required skills and level, centre, date, identity-document requirements and evidence deadline. Recheck the official route page if your application circumstances change.
