University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for Dawson College?

Dawson College, the English-language CEGEP in Montreal, asks applicants whose first language or school language was not English for IELTS Academic 6.0, TOEFL iBT 4, PTE Academic 50 or Duolingo 95 to 100. Since Quebec's language law changed, anyone who did not finish high school or CEGEP in Quebec must also pass a French test at B2.

Dawson's English and French tests

From Dawson's [admission requirements page](https://www.dawsoncollege.qc.ca/admissions/admission-requirements]. English scores are overall minimums with no band or section rules, and English and French results are valid for two years from the exam date. IELTS must be the Academic version.

RequirementAccepted tests and minimums
English (if your first language or high school language was not English)IELTS Academic 6.0; TOEFL iBT 4; PTE Academic 50; Duolingo 95–100
French (if you did not finish high school or CEGEP in Quebec)DELF tout public B2 (all four parts); DALF; TEF or TEFAQ B2 (level 7); TCF tout public B2 (not TCF Québec or TCF Canada); Bright Language 3.5–4 (B2)

Places, eligibility certificates and winter starts

Dawson admits applicants who hold a Certificate of Eligibility for English instruction first. Applicants without one, which includes international students, are admitted after all certificate holders who meet the program thresholds, and their cut-offs may vary with the number of applications.

International students are not eligible to apply for a winter semester unless they already hold a valid college-level CAQ (or CSQ) and a valid study permit. For foreign transcripts you can pay Dawson a $50 evaluation fee or submit an attestation of equivalence from Quebec's immigration ministry, which Dawson recommends.

Study permit and PGWP: separate rules

Dawson's scores decide admission only. IRCC sets no minimum English score for a study permit; any language condition is written into your letter of acceptance (see IELTS for a Canada study permit). The Post-Graduation Work Permit is a separate test again. IRCC's PGWP eligibility page asks for CLB 7 in all four skills if you graduate with a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree or from any other university program, and CLB 5 for any other college, polytechnic or non-university program. On IELTS General Training, CLB 7 is 6.0 in every skill and CLB 5 is Reading 4.0 and Writing, Listening and Speaking 5.0 (IRCC score table). The PGWP takes IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core, not IELTS Academic, and college programs also face a field-of-study rule if you applied for your study permit on or after 1 November 2024 (see IELTS for the PGWP). In Quebec there is one more step first: after you accept your offer you need a Certificat d'acceptation du Québec (CAQ) from the Quebec immigration ministry, and only then can you apply for the federal study permit.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Dawson College publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
