Graduate admission: IELTS 6.0
International applicants and US citizens whose native language is not English must post acceptable TOEFL or IELTS scores before they are considered: TOEFL 75 iBT or 537 paper-based, or IELTS 6.0, is normally required for regular admission. Official scores may not be more than two years old. Each program reviews its own applications, so ask your program about any higher bar. See international admission requirements.
You are exempt with a degree from an accredited college or university in the US, the UK, Canada (except Quebec), Australia or New Zealand, or if you are from a country in which English is an official language or predominantly spoken. The page does not list those countries, so confirm with Graduate Admissions whether yours counts before you skip the test. Graduate applicants with foreign degrees also need a NACES course-by-course evaluation with a GPA.

Undergraduate admission
Non-native English speakers send TOEFL 69 iBT or IELTS 6.0; first-year students can also use SAT Reading and Writing 480 or ACT English or Reading 17. Four years at a US high school removes the requirement for first-year students, and transfer students who completed ENGL 1101 at a US college do not need a test.
Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement Georgia Southern sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the Georgia Southern international admission page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where Georgia Southern University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
