Lakeland test minimums
From Lakeland's English language requirements page. All applicants must meet English language proficiency regardless of citizenship or country of origin, and tests must be taken within two years of the program start date. Lakeland notes that English language proficiency is different from an academic English course requirement, so your program may ask for both. It gives TOEFL only on the old 0–120 scale.
| Test | Lakeland minimum |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.0, at least 6.0 in each band |
| PTE Academic | 53, at least 50 in each communication skill |
| Duolingo | 100, at least 95 in each sub-score |
| TOEFL iBT | 78, at least 19 in each area |
| CAEL | 60, at least 55 in each band |
| Michigan English Test (MET) | 58 on all bands |
Ways to meet the requirement without a test
You can instead show a year of full-time education in English in Canada, or in a country on Lakeland's list of countries that satisfy English proficiency; India, Pakistan and the Philippines are not on that list. Other routes are 60% in English Language Arts 30-1 or 65% in 30-2, B or better in O-level, GCSE or IGCSE English, or B+ or better in six credits of transferable university English.
The Health Care Aide certificate follows Alberta Health's English requirements, which differ from the tests above, so check that program's page.

Study permit and PGWP: separate rules
Lakeland's scores decide admission only. IRCC sets no minimum English score for a study permit; any language condition is written into your letter of acceptance (see IELTS for a Canada study permit). The Post-Graduation Work Permit is a separate test again. IRCC's PGWP eligibility page asks for CLB 7 in all four skills if you graduate with a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree or from any other university program, and CLB 5 for any other college, polytechnic or non-university program, so a bachelor's degree earned at a college still needs CLB 7. On IELTS General Training, CLB 7 is 6.0 in every skill and CLB 5 is Reading 4.0 and Writing, Listening and Speaking 5.0 (IRCC score table). The PGWP takes IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core, not IELTS Academic, and college programs also face a field-of-study rule if you applied for your study permit on or after 1 November 2024 (see IELTS for the PGWP).
Frequently asked questions
Does Lakeland College accept PTE?+
Yes. PTE Academic 53 overall with at least 50 in each communication skill.
Does Lakeland accept Duolingo?+
Yes. 100 overall with at least 95 in each sub-score.
Is IELTS 6.5 with a 5.5 band enough for Lakeland?+
No. Lakeland asks for at least 6.0 in each band as well as 6.0 overall, so a 5.5 band falls short whatever the overall score.
How old can my test be for Lakeland?+
Tests must be taken within two years of the start date of your program.
Does the Lakeland IELTS score count for the PGWP?+
No. The admission score is on IELTS Academic. For the PGWP, IRCC asks for CLB 7 in every skill after a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree (a college degree included) and CLB 5 after other college and polytechnic programs, proved with IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core.
