What each option costs in India

Fees are from IDP India and Pearson's price finder, read on 9 October 2026 for our IELTS fee and PTE fee guides. Both are flat national prices, so no city is cheaper.

PTE AcademicINR 18,900Degree level, if your university accepts PTE
PTE Academic UKVIINR 18,900When you need a Secure English Language Test (SELT)
IELTS AcademicINR 19,000Degree level, if your university accepts it

Do you need a SELT at all?

UKVI sets B2 for degree-level study and B1 below degree level. At degree level with a Higher Education Provider, your university can assess your English itself, so a standard IELTS Academic, PTE Academic or a school English mark can be enough. Below degree level you need a SELT such as IELTS for UKVI (4.0 in each skill for B1) or PTE Academic UKVI (43 in each) (IELTS for a UK Student visa).

So the money-saving order is: check whether your university takes your Class 12 English (list); if not, check whether it takes PTE; book a UKVI version only if your CAS or course needs a SELT. PTE Academic UKVI is INR 350 cheaper than IELTS for UKVI.

Hidden costs that change the answer

A failed attempt doubles the price, so the cheapest test is the one you pass first time. Cancellation terms differ too: PTE refunds 100% more than 14 days before the test and 50% between 14 and more than 7 days, while a standard IDP India booking cancelled 15 or more days ahead loses up to 25%. IDP sends your first five Test Report Forms free; each extra one costs INR 350.

Some universities also offer their own tests: University of South Wales runs its English test free in India, and Swansea University lets offer holders take its SWELT test once for free. These count only for that university.

Check your level before paying INR 19,000: a free IELTS mock test or free PTE mock test shows which format suits you.
