IELTS fee in India by test type
Every figure below was read on 9 October 2026 on IDP India's fee page. IDP says the fee is the same in every city, and its city table shows INR 19,000 for Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Punjab and Kerala alike. So there is no saving in travelling to another city for a cheaper test.
The British Council no longer runs IELTS in India: its India site says IDP became the sole distributor of IELTS testing in India from 25 July 2021 (British Council India). Pure paper-based IELTS has also been discontinued in India; the paper option left is IELTS Writing on Paper, where you take Listening and Reading on computer and write by hand. The IDP India pages we read list no IELTS Online (at-home) option.
| Test | Fee (INR) | Transfer fee | Re-mark (EOR) fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS on Computer (Academic or General Training) | 19,000 | 4,750 | 14,250 |
| IELTS Writing on Paper (Academic or General Training) | 19,000 | 4,750 | 14,250 |
| IELTS for UKVI (on computer) | 19,250 | 4,850 | 14,400 |
| IELTS Life Skills (A1 and B1) | 18,000 | 4,500 | 13,500 |
| IELTS One Skill Retake | 12,650 | 3,200 | 9,450 |
Extra costs: Test Report Forms, re-marks and retakes
IDP India sends your first five electronic Test Report Forms to universities free. Each further university costs INR 350, and you can add at most five a day; to add more, log in again after 24 hours. If you are applying to many universities, list your top five when you book so they cost nothing.
The Enquiry on Results (re-mark) fee is INR 14,250 for a standard test, which is three quarters of a new test. It is refunded only if your band changes (our re-mark guide). If you missed your target in one skill only, One Skill Retake at INR 12,650 is usually cheaper than a full new test; it must be taken within 60 days of the original test (One Skill Retake guide).

Take a free scored IELTS mock →Transfer, cancellation and refund rules in India
These are the rules on IDP India's transfer and cancellation page, read on 9 October 2026. You apply through Candidate Login or with the Test Date Transfer & Cancellation/Refund Application Form at the centre, and IDP says approved refunds are paid within 7 to 10 working days.
For IELTS on Computer, Writing on Paper and One Skill Retake: a transfer is free 15 or more days before the Listening, Reading and Writing date; within 5 to 14 days it costs up to 25% of the fee (the fee page lists INR 4,750); within 4 days no transfer is allowed. A cancellation 15 or more days ahead refunds the fee minus an administration charge of up to 25%; within 14 days the fee is not refunded.
IELTS for UKVI and Life Skills follow different rules: you get 75% back more than 14 days before the test, 50% within 14 days but more than 2 days before, 25% within 2 days, and nothing on or after test day. A UKVI transfer must be requested more than 14 days ahead, to a date within three months, and only once.
IDP's fee page words some of these rules differently (for example it mentions a 9-day cut-off), so check the terms shown in Candidate Login before you cancel. If a minor's parent or guardian ID does not reach IDP by test day, the candidate cannot sit the test and 75% of the fee is refunded.
| When you ask | IELTS / Writing on Paper / OSR | IELTS for UKVI / Life Skills |

| 15 or more days before | Transfer free; cancel and lose up to 25% | Cancel: 75% refund; transfer once, fee up to 25% |
| 5 to 14 days before | Transfer for up to 25% of the fee; cancel: no refund | Cancel: 50% refund (more than 2 days before) |
| Within 4 days (UKVI: within 2 days) | No transfer; cancel: no refund | Cancel: 25% refund |
| Test day or after | No refund | No refund |
How to book and pay in India
IDP India offers three ways to register (how to register): online on the IDP India site, in person at an IDP branch or registration partner, or by courier with the application form. You need your passport: IDP asks for the first and last pages (plus any observation pages) and you must bring the original on test day.
Payment options listed by IDP India are credit or debit card (Visa or Mastercard), net banking, a demand draft payable to "IDP Education India Private Limited" at New Delhi, and a cash deposit at ICICI or HDFC branches using IDP's customised deposit slip. If you pay by demand draft, your seat is confirmed only once the draft clears, so card or net banking is the safer choice for a near date.
Common mistakes that cost money in India: booking IELTS when the course or visa only needs IELTS for UKVI (or the reverse; see IELTS for UKVI vs Academic), a name that does not match the passport exactly, and booking before you are ready. A full attempt costs INR 19,000, so take a free full IELTS mock test first and check your likely band with the band score calculator.
