IELTS for Denmark: university scores and free preparation

Choose your programme before choosing a target band. Danish universities set their own evidence rules; these master's examples show why the overall score, each skill and the documentation deadline all matter.
  • Test in these examples: IELTS Academic
  • Score requirements: Programme-specific
  • Check separately: All four skills
  • Residence permission: Separate decision

Aarhus master's programmes: English B6.56.0
Copenhagen master's programmes requiring English B6.56.0

Check the result's age and the retake policy

  • DTU: submit the official score report by the application deadline. Its IELTS validity period is two years from the test date.
  • Aarhus: the IELTS test must be no more than two years old when the application portal opens.
  • Copenhagen: the IELTS result must be no more than two years old at the start of the programme.
  • These three published master's policies do not accept IELTS One Skill Retake. Check your intended institution before relying on a partial retake.
For example, a 6.5 overall result with Writing 5.5 misses the 6.0 per-skill floor in every example above. Practise and assess the weakest skill as well as the overall band.

Turn your course requirement into a practice plan

  • Write down your programme, intake, accepted test version, overall target, four skill targets and evidence deadline.
  • Start with a free Academic Reading set and a Listening set. Record which question types caused errors and why.
  • Repeat the weakest question type on a new set; compare accuracy and time, rather than memorising the previous answer.
  • Practise writing and speaking too. Reading or listening marks cannot show whether you meet a writing or speaking requirement.

University admission and residence permission

Admission and residence permission are separate checks. SIRI's higher-education route requires language skills sufficient to participate in the course, alongside its other conditions. A university's IELTS threshold is not a universal Danish visa score, and an English-test result alone does not establish residence eligibility. Check the official SIRI route for your circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

Is IELTS 6.5 enough for every Danish university?+

No. The examples above have per-skill minimums, and Copenhagen programmes requiring English A ask for 7.0 overall. Check the exact course, intake and applicant category.

Should I take IELTS General Training for a Danish master's?+

The test route listed in these examples is IELTS Academic. Do not substitute General Training; follow your programme's accepted-evidence policy.

Can I use a university's IELTS score as Denmark's student-visa requirement?+

No. Admission and residence permission are separate. Read the university policy and the official SIRI higher-education route for your own circumstances.
