How should I prepare for PTE Academic?

Learn the format first, then practise question types in order of how many items you will face and how many skills each one feeds. Repeat Sentence (10–12 items), Read Aloud, Describe Image, Answer Short Question and the Reading fill-in-the-blanks come first. Pearson says many candidates prepare for two to four weeks; allow three to six if you need a big jump.

Step 1: set a target and take a baseline

Find the exact score your university or visa needs, overall and per skill. Pearson's typical minimums are 36–50 for foundation courses, 51–60 for undergraduate and 57–67 for postgraduate degrees (Pearson), but your course decides. Then take a full timed test to see where you stand: our free PTE mock test, or one of the four free Guided Practice Tests in Pearson's Smart Prep, which also has a study plan, sectional tests, video courses and test tips (Pearson).

Pearson's own advice is to get familiar with the format, use official materials and improve your four skills. It says preparation time depends on your current level, your experience of similar tests and your daily practice time (Pearson).

Where the marks are

Pearson publishes how many questions of each type appear and which skills each one scores (Score Guide), but not exact weights. The order below is our reading of those two facts, not an official weighting.

A 3–6 week plan

Six weeks suits a big jump or a first test; four is typical; three works only if your English is already near your target. For three weeks, do weeks 1–2 together, then 3–4, then 5–6. Practise every day, and record and replay your speaking.

Speaking: what the scoring rewards

Spoken answers are marked first on content, then on pronunciation and oral fluency, each from 0 to 5 (Score Guide). In Repeat Sentence, content errors are replacements, omissions and insertions; hesitations do not count against content, but they do affect fluency. Start speaking right after the tone. Pearson's Answer Short Question tips warn that if you wait more than three seconds, or stop for three seconds, the recording closes (Pearson).

Speak at normal conversational volume. You cannot re-record, and unnatural pauses or unclear words can lower your score (Handbook). Our Read Aloud scoring criteria and Repeat Sentence scoring criteria guides go deeper.

Writing: respect the form rules

Write Essay needs 200–300 words in 20 minutes; under 120 words scores zero for form, and so does an off-topic essay for content. Summarize Written Text is one sentence of no more than 75 words. Summarize Spoken Text is 50–70 words. In Write from Dictation each correctly spelled word earns a point, so spelling practice pays directly. Use British or American spelling, but stay consistent.

Why memorised templates are risky

The Score Guide says responses with significant pre-prepared or memorised material are classed as irrelevant, which means zero for content and no points for the response. Since August 2025, content in seven question types (Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Respond to a Situation, Summarize Group Discussion, Summarize Written Text, Write Essay and Summarize Spoken Text) is also checked by a human (Pearson). Learn useful structures, but describe what is actually on screen or in the audio.

Use an official Scored Practice Test before you book

Pearson's Scored Practice Test is a two-hour practice test in the same format, scored by the same engine, with a full Score Report. There are three versions with different questions (Pearson). Take one when your mock scores are near your target; more in PTE Scored Practice Test.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to prepare for PTE?+

Pearson says many candidates prepare for two to four weeks, depending on their level, test experience and daily practice time. Allow longer if you need a big score jump.

Can I prepare for PTE at home without coaching?+

Yes. Pearson's free Smart Prep has a study plan, four full Guided Practice Tests and test tips, and our free PTE practice and mock test cover every question type.

Do PTE templates work?+

Relying on them is risky. Pearson treats largely pre-prepared or memorised responses as irrelevant, which scores zero for content, and content in seven task types is now also checked by a human.

Which PTE question type should I practise most?+

Repeat Sentence: it has the most questions (10–12) and counts towards both Listening and Speaking.

When should I take the official Scored Practice Test?+

When your mock scores are close to your target, so you can check your readiness with Pearson's own scoring engine before booking.
