Is IELTS 6.0 enough for a postgraduate certificate at a Canadian college?

Usually not. In our data of 42 Canadian colleges and polytechnics (checked 4 to 10 October 2026), 15 publish a minimum we could read for graduate certificates, and none of them accept 6.0 overall: 12 ask 6.5 and 3 ask 7.0. IELTS 6.0 can still open one-year certificates and two-year diplomas at some colleges, such as Algonquin.

Colleges by graduate certificate IELTS minimum

Ontario colleges dominate this list. 6.0 is common for diplomas: Algonquin College, for example, asks 6.0 with no band below 5.5 for one-year certificates, two-year diplomas and three-year advanced diplomas. Graduate certificates are the post-degree programs, and they ask more.

How we counted: each figure comes from our own guide to that university, which restates its admissions pages (read 4 to 9 October 2026). We took the lowest graduate-certificate IELTS overall each guide's tables give; where a table could not be read cleanly the university is left out of the count rather than guessed. The full list, with a CSV, is on our IELTS university requirements data. A course page can ask for more than the university minimum, so check yours before you book.

Work permit rules that change the maths

Since 1 November 2024, Post-Graduation Work Permit applicants from college programs need CLB 5 in all four skills (IELTS General Training reading 4.0, writing 5.0, listening 5.0, speaking 5.0), against CLB 7 for university graduates. College graduates who applied for their study permit on or after 1 November 2024 also need an eligible field of study (IELTS for the PGWP).
