US universities with a graduate route at IELTS 6.0 or lower
Most of these are public universities in Texas, Ohio, the Dakotas and the Northeast, and several limit 6.0 to certain programs (often engineering or computer science). Departments can set higher scores than the university minimum, so read your program page.
How we counted: each figure comes from our own guide to that university, which restates its admissions pages (read 4 to 10 October 2026). We took the lowest graduate IELTS overall each guide's tables give; where a table could not be read cleanly the university is left out of the count rather than guessed. For the University of Arkansas we use its 6.5 overall, not the writing sub-score of 6.0 the data hub reads. The full list, with a CSV, is on our IELTS university requirements data. A course page can ask for more than the university minimum, so check yours before you book.

If you have 6.0 and your university asks 6.5
Many US universities offer conditional admission through their own English language institute: you are admitted to the degree but take English classes first. The bridge rows above are examples. Your I-20 follows the admission decision, and the F-1 student visa sets no English score of its own.
